Say Yes To Growth

Throughout August we’ve been saying Yes To Growth.

The simplest way to think of growth is perhaps in numbers.

More customers.

More followers.

More sales.

But isn’t this just part of the story?

Behind the scenes at The Women Who Business Community, we’ve spent much of August working on our own plans for growth.

We’ve been thinking carefully about what the next chapter of Women Who looks like and, more importantly, how we grow without losing the things that make this community great.

Our ambition is to take the support, opportunities and sense of belonging we’ve created here into more areas, allowing more women to access a business community where they can learn, build relationships, develop their confidence and feel genuinely supported.

But we’re very conscious that bigger doesn’t automatically mean better.

So our plans aren’t simply about putting more pins on a map.

We’re working on strengthening our foundations too.

We’re asking some big questions about where Women Who goes next.

What should we do more of?

What could we do better?

What do our members need from us as their businesses and lives change?

And most importantly: how do we grow without losing our values?

Because growth for us isn’t about becoming the biggest business community we possibly can.

It’s about becoming the best business community we possibly can.

Growth Isn’t Always Visible

There’s another side to growth that doesn’t get talked about nearly enough.

Your own.

The person running your business today isn’t the same person who started it.

Every conversation you’ve had, every mistake you’ve made, every client you’ve worked with and every decision you’ve had to make has taught you something.

Sometimes you don’t realise how much you’ve grown until you find yourself handling something that would once have completely overwhelmed you.

Perhaps you’re more confident saying no.

Maybe you’ve finally put your prices up.

You’ve become better at explaining what you do.

You’ve stopped comparing yourself quite so much.

You’ve asked for help instead of trying to do everything yourself.

You’ve walked into a room that you would once have been terrified to enter.

Or perhaps you’ve simply started trusting yourself a little more.

Small Growth Still Counts

One of the problems with constantly looking towards the next big milestone is that we become very good at moving the goalposts.

You reach one target and immediately create another.

You gain a new client or customer and start thinking about the next ten.

You learn a new skill and focus on everything you still don’t know.

You achieve something that once felt impossible and, within days, it somehow becomes ordinary.

We’re not always very good at stopping long enough to recognise how far we’ve already come.

But growth doesn’t have to be dramatic to matter, a 1% improvement is still an improvement.

One new connection matters.

One brave conversation matters.

One lesson learned from something going horribly wrong matters.

One small change that makes running your business easier matters.

And sometimes growth doesn’t even look like moving forward. Sometimes it looks like changing direction because you’ve realised something isn’t working.

Sometimes it means letting something go or creating stronger foundations before you build anything else or deciding that you don’t actually want the version of “success” you’ve been told you should be chasing.

That realisation is growth in itself right?!

What Does Growth Mean To You?

As August comes to an end, we’d love you to think back over the past eight months.

What do you know now that you didn’t know in January?

What have you become more confident doing?

What have you stopped tolerating?

What mistakes have taught you something?

What decisions are easier to make?

What are you doing now that the version of you from a year ago might have found difficult?

There will always be another target to hit and another thing to improve.

But don’t let your ambition for where you’re going stop you from recognising how far you’ve already come.

At Women Who, we’ve got some exciting growth plans ahead of us. But we’re determined to grow carefully, sustainably and in a way that stays true to the community we’ve spent years building.

And we’ll be supporting you as you do the same.

So this month, whether you’ve grown in turnover, your knowledge, your confidence, your boundaries or your belief in what you’re capable of …

Recognise it and celebrate it.
