2026 International Women’s Day

International Women’s Day – Why Male Allies Matter

Every year on 8th March, the world marks International Women’s Day.

Social media fills with messages celebrating incredible women, businesses spotlight female founders and workplaces share stories of progress.

And so they should. It’s wonderful.

But if we’re really honest, International Women’s Day exists because it’s still needed.

It exists because despite the progress we’ve made, women across the world continue to face barriers that men simply don’t experience in the same way. It exists because women still carry the weight of societal expectations, systemic inequality and daily pressures that are often invisible to others.

This is exactly why communities like The Women Who Business Community exist.

Why Female-Only Spaces Matter

One of the questions that sometimes arises when people hear about women-focused communities is: “Why do women need their own spaces?”

The answer? Because they are still necessary.

Women face challenges every single day; from subtle bias in the workplace to the constant pressure to somehow “have it all.” Build a successful career. Raise a family. Care for others. Look a certain way. Behave a certain way. Be ambitious, but not too ambitious right?!

It’s exhausting.

Female-focused communities create spaces where women can:

  • Speak openly without judgment
  • Share experiences that others truly understand
  • Learn from each other’s journeys
  • Build confidence and leadership
  • Support one another without competition

These spaces are not about exclusion. They are about psychological safety.

Feminism Isn’t a Dirty Word

Somewhere, along the way, the word feminist has almost become a dirty word. A word that a lot of women refrain from using because they don’t want to be seen as an aggravator, a man hater or think that women should dominant.

A feminist is someone who believes in equality between women and men.

That’s it.

  • Being a feminist doesn’t mean hating men.
  • It doesn’t mean women should dominate.
  • It simply means believing that everyone deserves the same opportunities, rights, and respect.

Globally, women currently have only around 64% of the legal rights that men hold.

Across critical areas of life including work, pay, safety, family rights, property ownership, business opportunities and retirement, legal systems still disadvantage women in many parts of the world.

So feminism isn’t extreme. It’s necessary.

Celebrating Women & Challenging Inequality

International Women’s Day plays an important role because it does several things at once.

It celebrates the incredible social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.

But it also shines a light on the inequalities that still exist.

It reminds us that progress has been made but that the work is not finished.

It highlights issues such as gender pay gaps, underrepresentation in leadership, violence against women and girls and legal inequality.

And it encourages all of us to keep pushing for change.

Why Male Allies Matter

Progress toward equality cannot happen without men.

We live in a ‘Man’s World’ not an ‘Equal World’. Men hold a significant amount of influence in many areas of society.

This means men have an incredibly powerful role to play in accelerating progress.

Male allies help by:

  • Listening to women’s experiences
  • Challenging sexism or bias when they see it
  • Sponsoring and mentoring women in leadership
  • Advocating for equal opportunities
  • Amplifying women’s voices in rooms where they may otherwise be overlooked

Research shows that when men actively engage in gender inclusion initiatives, progress dramatically increases. Of course it does! Because men still hold the influence.

Equality is not a women’s issue.

It’s a human issue.

Our Message This International Women’s Day

Let us be very clear.

Women who advocate for equality are not man-haters.

We are not anti-man. We are pro-women.

We believe women deserve to be respected, celebrated and supported in every area of life.

We believe women should have the same opportunities, safety and rights as men.

And we believe that when women thrive, society thrives.

  • Be a proud feminist.
  • Champion women.
  • Respect women.

Women deserve a world that treats them as equals.
