Say Yes To Starting

Why getting started matters more than getting it perfect.

There’s a moment most of us know all too well.

The idea is there. The quiet “what if…?”

And then the brakes go on.

January, with all its fresh-start energy, has a funny way of shining a light on the things we want to begin; a new service, a project, a habit, a braver version of ourselves. Yet for so many women in business, starting feels like the hardest part of all.

This month’s theme, Say Yes To Starting, isn’t about having it all figured out. It’s about understanding what holds us back and choosing to start anyway.

Let’s look at some of things that typically hold us back …

1. Fear of getting it wrong

Many women are conditioned to believe they need to be ready before they begin. More qualified. More confident. More certain. But, in reality, readiness is often something that only comes after you start, not before.

Clarity comes from movement, not thinking. You can plan forever, but clarity shows up when you test, try, tweak, because that’s when we learn. Starting gives you real information instead of imagined fears. So, just start and see what happens.

2. Perfectionism in disguise

Perfectionism doesn’t always look like high standards, sometimes it’s procrastination in disguise!

“I’ll start when the website’s finished.”

“I’ll have my photos taken once I’ve lost weight”

“When I feel more confident.”

But you don’t need confidence to begin, action creates it.

Confidence isn’t a prerequisite; it’s a by-product. Every small step you take builds evidence that you can do hard things. Perfection can quietly stop progress in its tracks. Let’s choose small chunks of progress over perfection this year.

3. Fear of being seen … and judged

Starting usually means being visible. And visibility can feel risky. What if people don’t like it? What if no one responds? What if they do respond and it’s actually really successful?

These fears are incredibly common and completely human. We’re in this together!

4. Comparing yourself to others

Social media has a lot to answer for here. When you’re comparing your beginning to someone else’s middle, it’s easy to feel behind before you’ve even begun. Don’t compare, just do you! And also, don’t believe everything you see or read!

5. Carrying too much responsibility

Many women are not just business owners, we’re carers, partners, parents, emotional anchors. Starting something new can feel overwhelming and at times even indulgent, when everyone else’s needs come first. It’s ok to put you first!

The cost of not starting is often higher than the risk of starting.

Not starting keeps you stuck in the “what if?”

Starting gives you answers. Even if something doesn’t work, you gain experience, insight, and direction. There really is very little to lose. Each time you start, even imperfectly, you strengthen your ability to cope with uncertainty. That resilience spills into every part of your business  … and life.

A gentle reminder

You don’t need permission.

You don’t need to be perfect.

You don’t need to have it all mapped out.

You just need to start.

This January, say YES TO STARTING because future-you will thank you for being brave enough to try.

And if you’re feeling that familiar mix of excitement and fear? You’re probably exactly where you’re meant to be anyway.

So, what are you waiting for? Get started now!
