As part of Big Love For Small Business, we asked Miriam the following questions …
Why did you start your business?
I’ve always loved to tell stories, reading them, photographing and sharing them. This passion led me into newspaper press photography, where I got to be a small part of someone’s story. Over the years the small business stories became my favourite thing to be involved with. Shining a light on them in the local media and seeing first hand the reaction from them and the community around them. So when I got made redundant I decided to use my contacts to shine a light on the stories I was interested in and show a bit of love to small business, charities and people who might not always get the recognition they deserve.
What motivates you to keep going in your business?
The feeling I get when I see the joy on people’s faces when I show them an article about their business. That has appeared in the local media. Also the feedback from my guests on my podcast. As well as seeing the confidence of my wellbeing photography students grow.
What are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced as a business owner?
Getting my name out there, I’m very good at helping others but not so good at shining a light on myself. Also knowing my worth, as we all do I struggle with pricing.
What are some of your proudest wins or achievements in your business journey?
Having my first media advice session result in a half page article with my words and pictures used in a regional newspaper, highlighting a wonderful initiative from some working Mothers. Being recognised as a Woman Who Supports highly commended in the Women Who Business Community Awards. Being featured on the BBC Upload programme with HW Nina DasGupta.
What advice would you give to someone thinking about starting their own business?
Try and work out a business plan, write it down but don’t be bound to it. Allow yourself to evolve and be flexible. Get involved in a networking community, where you will find answers to questions you may have. However the main advice is to be brave and have faith that your passion and drive will help you through it.
What do you love doing in your free time?
I love to get outdoors, walking and sometimes jogging. Wellbeing photography gives me time to slow down and meditate. I also love to read, often different genres depending on my mood.
What do you love most about our community?
I love the support from everyone, even people I haven’t met in person. I love the sense of wellbeing and care that I get when I step into a room or event that is being held. I know that everyone around me is willing me to be the best version of myself, helping me shine rather than trying to take my light away.
I have made some really great friends through this community, who have given me the confidence to try new things, we have worked together as guests on my podcast, being each other’s models. They have been my teachers and I have learned so much from them. My mindset shift has changed when it comes to networking, when I first started (attending other networking groups) it seemed to be all about referrals and you could only have one person from your profession attending at a time. There was a lot of pressure and I had begun to feel deflated. That’s when I discovered the wonderful Women Who Business Community. My confidence has grown and it’s all thanks to the fabulous women I have met and talked to.
What would you say to someone considering joining our community?
I would say go for it! If you want a community who will support and care about you as a person not just your business then this is the group for you. There are lots of different ways to get involved online, in person and community events. Everyone is rooting for you to succeed. Everyone has been where you are and you can learn and share your knowledge with others. I am reminded of this quote when it comes to Lisa and the team: “Kindness is igniting a light in someone else for no reason other than to watch them enjoy the glow”.
