Meet Helen Cochrane, founder of Alvechurch Reiki and Alvechurch Languages.
Helen is a master of blending passions. Her love for education and spiritual healing creates a beautiful balance between traditional work and self-care.
Helen has a genuine love for people and finds joy in watching them grow and develop, whether that’s through learning a new language or exploring their spiritual journey. Her nurturing and compassionate nature provides a safe and supportive space where others can truly evolve.
Through Alvechurch Languages she offers private tuition for young people and adults in Spanish and French. She has over 20 years’ of experience and is committed to life long learning.
Through Alvechurch Reiki she offers Reiki treatments and accredited courses. Helen is an accredited Reiki practitioner listed with the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council since September 2023 and prides herself on the highest of professional standards that this registration entails.
Helen’s Reiki courses, which cover both western Reiki and traditional Japanese Reiki include:
Reiki 1, Reiki 2, Reiki Master Teacher and the Professional Reiki Diploma, which enables students to qualify as accredited practitioners.
Courses, taught in small groups, include a wealth of practical knowledge about Reiki and a focus on the meditative aspects of the practice. Helen creates a healing, retreat vibe for her courses and workshops and is committed to supporting her students long term.

Why did you start your business?
Ill health and family commitments meant I had to step down from my teaching job and I had recently completed my training as a Reiki Master Teacher. Reiki had been a life-changing practice for me and it felt only natural to start Alvechurch Reiki and offer Reiki treatments and courses so that others could be met where they are at to find the benefits of Reiki for themselves.
The huge demand for language sessions meant that Alvechurch Languages established itself organically.
What motivates you to keep going in your business?
A commitment to healing and learning really keeps me going!
Seeing my clients and students thrive and their confidence getting a boost is hugely motivational. By support others, I am continuing to learn so much all the time.
What are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced as a business owner?
Some months are slower than others and they can leave you questioning whether you’ve made the right choices sometimes. It can also be challenging to know where to market new courses.
What are some of your proudest wins or achievements in your business journey?
Becoming an accredited training provider was wonderful, establishing community for Reiki enthusiasts with the monthly Reiki Shares I hold has been astounding and with my languages teaching, the fact that so many students stay with me for years is testament that I am supporting them well.
The ultimate proudest win was without doubt winning the Women Who Special Achievement Award 2024. No other achievement has ever meant so much to me or helped me see my worth quite as much.
What advice would you give to someone thinking about starting their own business?
It’s not plain sailing, but it’s worth it for all the moments you will catch yourself thinking “I can’t believe I get to do this”
What do you love doing in your free time?
I love Reiki meditations and I love learning and continuing to develop myself. At the weekends I love spending time with my husband and sons, getting out in nature with my dog and running along the canal.
What do you love most about our community?
The support for each other. There’s no competition, pure community love!

Do it – so worth it.
